"For the past 17 years, KARAOKE
WITH KENNY has been a reliably boisterous and entertaining night out at the West
Hollywood club Revolver. While Revolver permanently shut its doors in
July, fortunately for barroom crooners, the closure won't mean an end to the
fun. Karaoke with Kenny has moved to the sleek and spacious Here Lounge on
Robertson Boulevard, where everyday people and professional singers alike can be
heard hitting the high notes-or at least attempting to.
Kenny Morse, the titular host of Karaoke with Kenny, began his weekly Monday night party at Revolver 17 years ago. "In 1990, the former managers of Revolver needed a host for karaoke, Within six months, it became the place to be on a Monday, " he remembers.
Morse's unique background lent itself perfectly to his karaoke gig. As a stage actor, he was in the Los Angeles cast of Jesus Christ Superstar and the Broadway/National Tour of Grease. He is also Mr. Traffic from time to time on the KTLA Morning News and has hosted his own live call in radio program, The Driving Show with Mr. Traffic on L.A. Radio station KRLA. "In the beginning it was more of a normal karaoke," Morse explains, "but I started having friends, actors, and performers come to the show, and they brought their friends-it was a natural evolution."
The evolution has spread to the point where some recognizable voices have been heard in the club. Thelma Houston has popped in to sing her hit "Don't Leave Me This Way." Anastacia, as well as Blu Cantrell (best known for her song "Hit 'Em Up With Style"), and out Christian music recording duo Jason and deMarco ("They're one of the hottest things in Christian pop," Morse says. "The difference is they're gay committed life partners") have all sung onstage. When asked what one of the most noteworthy nights has been, Morse says, "Alexis Arquette came in and in one move, dropped his pants. Whether or not his full view was noteworthy is another matter."
Despite frequent appearances of professionals, Morse is deft at making sure novices are still comfortable singing how they did it "My Way" in front of a crowd. "we not only get pros, but the civilians come in too," he says. "Anyone can sing. It's 70 percent great singers. I make people feel comfortable who aren't great."
The change in venue hasn't dimmed the
popularity of Karaoke With Kenny. On the first night at Here Lounge on July
26th, there was a two hour wait to sing. "I'm completely thrilled to
be at Here," Morse says of the venue change. "It's a gorgeous
club, the staff has been really wonderful. and they're picking up a West
Hollywood tradition."
